Musicals. (!)

This year’s film genre class at BYU/TMA explores the Musical, mostly though not entirely as made in Hollywood.  We have a schedule!  Sing along…

FILM GENRES: THE MUSICAL

TMA 492, Winter 2015

Class Objective: to learn a bunch of stuff and see a load of films relating to the broad topic of the film musical. The literature on this subject is very rich, and very abundant. In many ways one semester’s worth of discussions can only scratch the surface. However, we’ll make a very deep scratch! One of our main goals is to become musicals-literate. Attentive, engaged viewing of the films on offer will go a long way toward accomplishing that goal.

As we engage in our viewing survey we will also learn about many of the cultural and historical factors that have informed musical films, as well as some of their many and evolving styles and conventions.

As a supplement, and at the same time as a foundation, we will spend some time learning about and listening to music itself. There is a literacy component to this part of the class as well. We will touch upon both classical and popular material, and think about how we can more purposefully incorporate music into our lives, both during and after the class.
